The Manu National Park offers by far the greatest diversity of animals and plants in the world. No other destination in Peru—or beyond—can compare with Manu. Nowhere else can one experience such a magnificently preserved transect of tropical habitats, from Andean grasslands and cloud forests to foothills and lowland rainforests.
Manu hosts the highest diversity of birds, mammals, and plants of any park on Earth, including more than 1,000 of the world’s 9,700 bird species, 200 mammal species, and 15,000 flowering plants. Among its most photogenic spectacles are giant otters playing, thousands of parrots and macaws gathering at clay licks, the dance of the cock-of-the-rock, troops of monkeys in their natural habitat, and massive lowland tapirs in clay forests.
Average rainfall in the Manu lowlands ranges between 2,500 and 3,500 millimeters (98–138 inches) per year, with most rain falling between November and April. The average annual temperature is 28 °C (82 °F), with daytime highs of 34 °C (93 °F) and nighttime lows of 22 °C (72 °F). During the dry season, cold fronts from the South Atlantic (friajes) occur about once a month, dropping daytime temperatures to 15 °C (59 °F) and nighttime to 13 °C (55 °F).
